Samahan Gala a succes!

Last night's Samahan 25th Anniversary Gala was a smashing succes!

I arrived at the hotel just a little after 4PM and they were almost done setting up the sound system. Alyss was already there and we dropped all our things in the dressing room.

Some adjustments were made during the sound check but we were done well before the first guests arrived at 6 PM for coctails. At 7 PM, just before the Ambassador's arrival, everyone was seated and we were welcomed by the Master of Ceremonies. After the welcome address by the President of Samahan sa Netherlands soup was served. Next we all helped ourselves to the mouthwatering dinner buffet.

Then I went to the dressing room to change into my tuxedo and waited for my introduction. Around 9 PM the guests were called to attention and I was introduced. I entered the room to the beat of Barry Manilow's showstopper "Copacabana" which was well received. My second song was more sedate: Neil Diamond's "September Morn'".  The audience asked for more but my next songs were not to be until later in the evening.

Next thing on the program was an inspirational message by Ambassador Arguelles, followed by awards to Samahan benefactors and volunteers. Then dessert and coffee was served, and it was time for more music.

This time it was Alyss Andico who was introduced, and she sang two popular Filipino songs, including "Ako ay Pilipino". The she invited me to join her for our duet. We had tried out "Last Night of the World" from Miss Saigon during the sound check, and gave a very nice rendition of this beautiful song. Then Alyss left for a quick change of clothes while I sang Frank Sinatra's "The Lady is a Tramp".  Alyss returned with two more popular songs, one of which was "Angels", the powerful RobbieWilliams/Jessica Simpson song.

After Alyss' performance, we were both called back by Mayet Abarquez, Samahan President, to receive a beautiful bouquet of flowers and envelope as a token of their appreciation.

It was a great evening with a wonderful atmosphere amongst very friendly people.
